Reading Feynman

I haven’t updated my blog in a while because I simply haven’t had much energy following my father’s death. I’m beginning to re-engage, though am also taking this time to watch some of the movies I’ve wanted to see for a while, and most importantly read a few books. Last night I finished a personal favorite, Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman! (Adventures of a Curious Character). Feynman is the famous theoretical physicist who was known as much for his bongo-playing skills and appreciation of the ladies as he was for winning the Nobel prize. His life was truly fascinating, and what I like most about him is his tireless energy and creativity.

I’ve often had a hard time defining what I’d like my life to be like, and I often say that I want people to write about it, though I’m not completely comfortable with this definition as it suggests I care about publicity. I think I should phrase it to express my desire that my life is so interesting people could write about it. Anyway, I want it to be as interesting as Feynman’s life was. Which, even for me, is a pretty tall order. But I’m trying.

I also started to refocus on community service and small business. I don’t have a specific idea of what I’d like to do long term, but I called SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives) to volunteer helping potential entrepreneurs go over their business plan. While I think I will enjoy it on the day-to-day level, I think it will also help me greatly if I ever head towards business consulting, either on the non-profit/developing world level, or the money-grubbing first world capitalist level.

Also, on a life-in-transition note, I sold my beloved motorcycle last night. I hadn’t ridden it in some 4 or 6 years, but I had it since 1996, riding it all the way from NJ to Virginia once, and around NJ as my primary vehicle for a few years. If I ever buy a motorcycle again, it will probably be for trans-continental trips, down to South America or something, but this wasn’t the bike to make that ride on.
